When you close a uPVC window and lift or turn the handle, you are not just clicking a single latch. You are driving a strip of metal hidden inside the frame that pushes several locking points out at once, all around the sash. Those points hook into keeps fixed on the outer frame and pull the window tight shut. That is why modern uPVC windows are hard to force: there is not one weak point, there are several strong ones working together.

Turn the handle, the gearbox drives the strip, the strip moves the cams, and the cams grip the keeps. Simple in idea, precise in practice.
The reason it is called multi-point locking is that the sash is secured at several places at once, not just by the handle. A typical window has anywhere from two to five locking points around the opening. Because the force is spread out, the sash is pulled evenly against its seals, which does two useful jobs: it keeps the window secure, and it compresses the weather seal so draughts and rain stay out.

The clever part is the gearbox behind the handle. Inside it, a small gear turns as you move the handle and meshes with teeth on the locking strip, converting a rotation into a smooth sliding motion. Lift the handle up (on most tilt-and-turn and casement designs) and the cams travel into the locked position. Lock the handle with the key and the gearbox is held so it cannot be driven back, which is what stops the window being slipped open from outside.
Because the whole thing relies on the strip and cams lining up exactly with the keeps, even a small drop of the sash on its hinges can make the handle feel stiff. That is usually a sign the window needs adjusting rather than replacing.
