The good news is it usually means the glass has failed, not the whole window, so the cloudy to clear windows cost is often far lower than people fear. Here is why it happens and what the repair runs to in 2026. We sort misted windows all over York and North Yorkshire, so these figures come from real local jobs. ## Why double glazing goes cloudy A sealed unit is two panes of glass with a spacer bar and a pocket of dry air or gas between them. A seal around the edge keeps moisture out. Over time that seal can break down, and once it does, damp air gets in and condenses between the panes. That is the misting you see. You cannot wipe it away, because it is on the inside of the sealed unit. Once a unit has blown like this, it has lost its insulating value too, so it is worth putting right rather than living with. Common causes include: - Age, as seals do not last forever. - Trapped water sitting in the frame drainage. - Damage or stress to the unit over the years. - South-facing windows that heat and cool a lot each day. ## The cheaper fix: replace the sealed unit In most cases you do not replace the frame at all.
