The honest answer is that neither wins outright. They suit different rooms, different budgets and different ways of living. This guide walks through opening style, glass area, security and cost so you can choose the one that fits your home rather than the one that looks best in a showroom. ## The quick difference French doors are a pair of doors, hinged at the sides, that meet in the middle and swing open. They give you a wide, welcoming opening and a traditional look that suits most York homes, from period terraces to newer semis. Sliding doors run on a track and glide sideways behind a fixed panel. Nothing swings into the room or the garden, so they save space and give you big, uninterrupted panes of glass. Both let plenty of light in and both connect the house to the garden. The right choice comes down to how much room you have and what you want the doors to do. ## Space and how they open This is the factor that decides it for a lot of people. - **French doors need swing room.** When open, the leaves take up space either inside the room or out on the patio. Because the frames are slimmer in proportion to the panels, you get bigger panes and a clearer view of the garden. On an aluminium slider especially, the sightlines are lovely and the frame almost disappears. French doors have a central meeting point where the two leaves come together, plus the frames around each leaf, so there is a little more frame in your eyeline. Many people like that classic, symmetrical look, and with slim frames the difference is smaller than you might think. If an unbroken view is your priority, though, sliders have the edge. ## Security Both can be very secure when they are made and fitted well. Modern French and sliding doors come with multipoint locking, toughened glass and internally beaded frames, which are the things that actually matter for keeping a door safe. With French doors, the leaf that opens second is locked at several points, so ask about the shootbolts top and bottom. With sliders, look for anti-lift blocks so the panel cannot be jemmied off its track.
