# How to Adjust a uPVC Door Locking Mechanism

If your uPVC door drags, catches or will not lock without a fight, the fix is often in the alignment rather than the mechanism itself. Learning how to adjust a uPVC door locking mechanism, mostly by lining up the keeps and hinges, can turn a frustrating door back into one that closes with a satisfying click. Here is how we approach it.

## How a multipoint locking mechanism works

Most modern uPVC doors use a multipoint lock. When you lift the handle, a strip inside the edge of the door drives several locking points out at once: usually hooks, rollers or bolts spaced up and down the door. These slot into keeps, the metal slots fixed into the frame. When everything lines up, the points glide into the keeps and the key turns easily.

When the door shifts even slightly, those points stop meeting the keeps cleanly. That is what makes a lock feel stiff, notchy or impossible without lifting and shoving. So adjusting the mechanism is really about getting the door and the keeps back into agreement.

## Start by finding where it catches

Before adjusting anything, work out where the problem is. Open the door and lift the handle in mid-air, away from the frame. If the mechanism throws all its points out smoothly with no resistance, the mechanism is fine and the issue is alignment. If it feels gritty or stiff even here, the mechanism itself may be the fault, which we cover further down.

Next, close the door slowly and watch, or listen, for which point catches first. A smear of lipstick or marker on the locking points can transfer onto the keeps and show exactly where they are hitting.

## Adjusting the keeps for a smooth lock

The keeps on many uPVC doors have a little play built in. Each is held by two screws, and loosening them lets you nudge the keep a couple of millimetres.

To adjust them:

1. Loosen the two screws on the keep that is catching, just enough to move it
2. Shift the keep slightly towards or away from the door face, or up or down, so the locking point enters cleanly
3. Nip the screws back up and test with the handle
4. Repeat on any other point that catches

Work one keep at a time and test between each change. Small moves make a big difference. Getting the compression right matters too: the door should pull firmly onto its seals without you having to strain the handle.

## Adjusting the hinges if the whole door has dropped

If several points catch rather than just one, the door has probably dropped or moved as a whole. That is a hinge adjustment, not a keep adjustment. uPVC door hinges usually adjust for height, side-to-side and compression using an Allen key or screwdriver. Raise or shift the door a quarter turn at a time, testing after each tweak, until the locking points meet the keeps. Our [repairs team in York](https://smwindowsanddoors.co.uk/window-door-repairs-york) does this regularly if you would rather have it set up properly first time.

## Keep it running smoothly

Once aligned, a quick service keeps things sweet. Wipe the keeps clean and apply a dry PTFE or silicone lubricant to the locking points and the mechanism through the faceplate. Steer clear of oil-based sprays, which collect grit and clog the gears. A twice-a-year clean and lube does more for a lock's life than most people realise.

## When to get the hardware checked rather than adjusted

Adjusting only works when the mechanism and cylinder are sound. Get it looked at properly if the handle has gone loose or floppy, the key turns without engaging the points, the mechanism grinds even with the door open, or the door has been forced repeatedly. A failing gearbox, the heart of a multipoint lock, needs measuring and replacing rather than tweaking.

It is also worth a security review while you are at it. If your cylinder is an older type without anti-snap protection, upgrading it is a sensible move. If the door itself is tired, our [uPVC door range](https://smwindowsanddoors.co.uk/upvc-doors-york) is worth a look before you sink money into repeated repairs.

## Rough 2026 costs

Prices vary with your door and hardware, so treat these as broad 2026 guides. Adjusting and servicing a door on a call-out often lands around 60 to 120 pounds. Replacing a worn multipoint mechanism typically runs from roughly 130 to 300 pounds fitted. ## FAQs

### How do I stop my uPVC door catching when I lock it?

Find which locking point catches, then loosen and nudge the keep in the frame so the point enters cleanly. If several points catch, the door has likely dropped and needs a hinge adjustment instead.

### Can I adjust a uPVC door locking mechanism without tools?

You will usually need a screwdriver for the keeps and an Allen key for the hinges. Both are simple tools, and the adjustments themselves are small and straightforward for a confident homeowner.

### Why does my uPVC door lock feel stiff even with the door open?

That points to the mechanism itself rather than alignment. A gritty or stiff mechanism with no pressure on it is often a worn gearbox, which needs replacing rather than adjusting.

### Should I upgrade the lock cylinder while adjusting the door?

It is worth checking. If your cylinder is an older type with no anti-snap protection, upgrading it improves security noticeably and is a quick, low-cost job to do at the same time.
