# How to Choose Between Bifold and Sliding Doors

When people set out to buy the best bi folding doors UK homeowners rave about, they often end up weighing them against sliding patio doors instead. Both open your home to the garden and both look great, but they do different jobs. This guide walks through the real differences so you can pick the one that suits your room, your budget and how you actually live.

## The quick version

- **Bifolds** fold back and stack to one side, opening almost the entire width so there is little between you and the garden.
- **Sliding doors** glide one panel behind another, so part of the opening is always glass, but the frames are slimmer and the view when closed is cleaner.

If you want the widest possible opening, lean bifold. If you want the best view when the doors are shut, lean sliding. Everything below fills in the detail.

## The view when closed

You will spend far more days looking at your doors shut than flung open, especially through a Yorkshire winter. This is where sliding doors have the edge. Modern sliders have slim sightlines and big panes, so when closed you get an almost uninterrupted view of the garden.

Bifolds have more frames because every leaf has its own, so when shut there are more vertical bars across the glass. Lovely when open, a little busier when closed. Weigh up how often the doors will actually be open.

## The opening when open

This is where bifolds win. Fold them back and you can open up to around 90 percent of the aperture, which genuinely dissolves the wall between inside and out. For a party, a summer barbecue or bringing the garden into an open plan kitchen, nothing beats it.

A slider typically opens around half the width, because one panel slides behind another that stays put. Plenty for fresh air and access, but not the full wall of open space a bifold gives.

## Space and how the doors stack

Think about where the doors go when open: - **Bifolds** stack in a concertina to one or both sides. That stack projects into the room or out onto the patio, so you need somewhere for it to sit clear of furniture and paths. - **Sliders** need no stacking room at all. The panels simply slide along the track within the width of the opening, which is handy in a tight room or a compact patio.

## Cost

Prices overlap and depend heavily on size, spec and material, so treat these as rough 2026 guides and get a quote for your own opening.

- **Aluminium bifolds:** commonly 2,500 to 6,000 pounds and up supplied and fitted, depending on the number of leaves and the size.
- **Aluminium sliding doors:** a similar band, often 2,500 to 6,500 pounds, with very large or premium sliders higher.

Neither is reliably cheaper across the board. A small three leaf bifold and a large two panel slider can land in very different places, so pricing your actual opening is the only way to compare fairly. Both come in our [aluminium sliding and bi-fold doors](https://smwindowsanddoors.co.uk/aluminium-sliding-bi-fold-doors) range.

## Warmth and material

Both perform well in aluminium with a proper thermal break and good double glazing. Aluminium is the usual choice for both because it holds large panes in slim frames. uPVC and composite alternatives exist for smaller sliding patio doors at a lower cost, which our [uPVC doors](https://smwindowsanddoors.co.uk/upvc-doors-york) range covers.

Whichever you choose, ask for the U value and the glass spec rather than settling for a vague promise of efficiency. A garden facing wall of glass is worth getting right for warmth.

## So which should you choose?

- **Choose bifolds if** the priority is throwing the whole wall open, you have room for the stack, and the doors will genuinely be open a lot in summer.
- **Choose sliding doors if** you want the cleanest view when closed, you are tight on space for a stack, and you value big uninterrupted panes.

There is no wrong answer, only the one that fits your room and how you live. When you are ready, a survey will confirm sizes, thresholds and any structural support the opening needs.

## FAQs

### Are bifold or sliding doors better?

Neither is simply better. Bifolds open almost the full width and dissolve the wall to the garden, while sliding doors give a cleaner view when closed and need no stacking space. Choose bifolds for the biggest opening and sliders for the best closed view.

### Which is more expensive, bifold or sliding doors?

They overlap heavily and depend on size, material and spec. A small bifold and a large slider can cost very differently, so neither is reliably cheaper. Price your actual opening to compare fairly.

### Do sliding doors give a better view than bifolds?

When closed, usually yes, because sliders have slimmer frames and fewer vertical bars across the glass. Bifolds have more frames since every leaf has its own, so they look busier shut but open far wider.

### Do bifold doors let in more cold than sliding doors?

Not inherently. Both perform well in aluminium with a good thermal break and double glazing. Warmth comes down to the quality of the system and glass, so ask for the U value rather than assuming one is warmer.

### Which needs less space, bifold or sliding doors?

Sliding doors, because the panels slide within the opening and need no room to stack. Bifolds fold into a concertina that projects into the room or onto the patio, so they need clear space to stack.
