# How to Choose the Right Internal Doors

Internal doors are easy to overlook until you live with a set that does not suit the house. Get them right and they tie a home together and work smoothly for years. This guide covers how to pick style, material and finish, and where the best place to buy internal doors is for the result you want.

We work with homeowners across York and North Yorkshire, so this is practical advice built around real homes rather than showroom theory.

## Match the door to the age of your home

The quickest way to a set of doors that looks right is to follow the character of the house.

- **Period terraces and cottages:** panelled doors, often four or six panels, suit older homes and echo the original joinery.
- **Victorian and Edwardian homes:** two or four panel doors sit well with high ceilings and deep skirtings.
- **Modern and new-build homes:** flush or simple contemporary doors keep things clean and uncluttered.

You do not have to be rigid about it, but a door that fights the age of the house tends to look off, even if you cannot quite say why.

## Pick the right material and construction

Internal doors are usually one of a few types, and the difference is mostly weight, feel and cost:

- **Hollow core:** light and cheap, fine for cupboards and low-traffic rooms, but they feel flimsy and block little sound.
- **Solid core:** heavier, more solid underfoot and much better at blocking noise, ideal for bedrooms and bathrooms.
- **Solid timber:** the premium option, warm and characterful, and the natural choice for period homes.

For rooms where you want quiet and a quality feel, a solid core or solid timber door is well worth the extra over a hollow core.

## Think about finish

You have two broad routes:

- **Pre-finished:** the door arrives ready painted, oiled or veneered, which saves time and gives a consistent result.
- **Unfinished:** cheaper to buy, but you or a decorator will need to paint or treat it, so factor that in.

White primed doors you paint to match your trim are a popular, flexible choice. Oak veneer suits homes going for a warmer, natural look.

## Do not forget the details

The bits around the door make a big difference to how it feels day to day:

- **Handles and hinges** in one consistent finish across the house look tidy and considered.
- **Glazed doors** borrow light into hallways and dark rooms.
- **Fire doors** may be required in certain layouts, such as between a garage and the house or in some loft conversions. Rules vary and change over time, so check the current requirements with your local authority or building control before you buy.

## Where is the best place to buy internal doors?

You have a few options, each with trade-offs:

- **DIY sheds and online retailers:** cheapest for standard sizes, but you handle fitting, finishing and any problems yourself.
- **Specialist door suppliers:** wider choice and better advice, often with fitting available.
- **A local installer:** best when doors are part of a bigger job, when openings are non-standard, or when you want it measured, supplied and fitted properly with one point of contact.

The best place really depends on the job. For a single standard cupboard door, a shed is fine. For a whole house, awkward openings or doors that need to match new windows and front doors, a local installer usually saves hassle and gives a neater result. You can read a bit [about how we work](https://smwindowsanddoors.co.uk/about) to see whether that suits your project.

## Rough 2026 costs

Guide ranges to help you plan, not fixed quotes:

- **Hollow core internal door:** roughly £30 to £90 each, supply only
- **Solid core or panelled door:** roughly £90 to £250 each, supply only
- **Solid timber or bespoke door:** often £200 to £600+ each
- **Fitting per door:** commonly £40 to £120, more for reshaping the frame

Handles, hinges and finishing add to the total, so [request a free quote](https://smwindowsanddoors.co.uk/request-a-quote) if you want doors supplied and fitted as a package.

## FAQs

### What is the best place to buy internal doors?

It depends on the job. DIY sheds and online retailers are cheapest for standard sizes if you fit them yourself. A specialist supplier or local installer is better for wider choice, advice, non-standard openings or a supplied-and-fitted job.

### Should internal doors match throughout the house?

Generally yes. A consistent door style and handle finish makes a home feel considered and well put together. You can vary the odd door, such as a glazed door into a dark hallway, but a common thread looks best.

### Are solid doors worth it over hollow core?

For living spaces and bedrooms, usually yes. Solid core and solid timber doors feel more substantial and block far more noise than a hollow core door. Hollow core is fine for cupboards and low-traffic areas where cost matters more.

### Do I need fire doors inside my home?

Sometimes. Certain layouts, such as between an integral garage and the house or in some loft conversions, may require fire doors. Rules vary and change over time, so confirm the current requirements with your local authority or building control.
