 3 Minutes Read

Coloured uPVC doors look smart, but the darker and richer finishes show dust, fingerprints and water spots more than plain white ever did. The worry is always the same: how do you get it clean without dulling the colour or leaving streaks? Knowing how to clean a coloured upvc door safely comes down to gentle products and a light touch, and it takes less effort than you might think. Here is the simple way to keep anthracite, rosewood and the rest looking their best.

## Why coloured finishes need extra care

Most coloured uPVC doors are either foiled, with a coloured film bonded to the surface, or sprayed. Popular shades like anthracite grey, black, rosewood, chartwell green and cream all have a finish sitting on top of the uPVC. That finish is tough and made to last for years, but harsh chemicals and abrasive pads can dull it, cause streaking, or in time affect the colour. So the aim is to clean gently and never scrub.

Darker colours also show smears far more than white, so how you dry the door matters as much as how you wash it. Our [composite doors in York](https://smwindowsanddoors.co.uk/composite-doors-york) and coloured uPVC ranges use hard-wearing finishes, but they still last longest with kind treatment.

## The safe cleaning method

You do not need anything special. Warm soapy water does the job on almost any coloured door.

- Fill a bucket with warm water and a little washing-up liquid
- Use a soft cloth or non-scratch sponge, never a scouring pad
- Wipe the door down gently, following one direction rather than circles
- Pay attention to the handle area, letterplate and edges where hands touch
- Rinse with clean water on a fresh cloth
- Dry straight away with a soft microfibre cloth to stop watermarks and streaks

That final dry-off is the secret to a smear-free finish on dark colours. Leave it to air dry and you will see every water spot.

## Dealing with stubborn marks

For marks that will not shift with soapy water, step up gently, not harshly.

- **Fingerprints and greasy smears** around the handle usually come off with a slightly stronger washing-up liquid mix, since it is made to cut grease
- **Bird droppings or sap** should be softened with warm water first, then wiped, never scraped
- **General weathering** responds to a dedicated uPVC cleaner suitable for coloured finishes, applied with a soft cloth

Always test any cleaner on a hidden edge first, and rinse well afterwards.

## What to keep away from coloured uPVC

These damage or dull coloured finishes, so avoid them:

- **Abrasive creams, scouring powders and pads**
- **Magic erasers and melamine sponges**, which are mildly abrasive
- **Bleach and strong solvents** like acetone, white spirit and nail polish remover
- **Cream cleaners** designed for scrubbing
- **Pressure washers up close**, which can lift edges of foil and force water past seals

If in doubt, the gentler option is always the safer one on a coloured door.

## Protecting the colour and the moving parts

A couple of extra habits keep a coloured door looking new. Once or twice a year, after cleaning, you can apply a uPVC finish conditioner or a little car-style polish made for uPVC, which adds a light protective layer and lifts the shine. Avoid anything with grit or cutting compound in it.

Do not forget the working parts either. Wipe the seals and treat them with a silicone conditioner so they stay supple, and put a drop of light oil on the hinges, lock and letterplate to keep everything moving smoothly. If a handle or lock is stiff or worn, our [window and door repairs in York](https://smwindowsanddoors.co.uk/window-door-repairs-york) team can put it right rather than you struggling with it.

## Keeping on top of it

Coloured doors are easiest to look after with a quick wipe every few weeks, especially around the handle, plus a proper clean a few times a year. Regular light care means marks never build up, the colour stays even, and your door keeps that just-fitted look for a long time.

## FAQs

### How do I clean an anthracite grey uPVC door without streaks?

Wash with warm soapy water and a soft cloth, then dry immediately with a microfibre cloth. The quick dry-off is what prevents the streaks and watermarks that show up so easily on dark grey.

### Can I use bleach on a coloured uPVC door?

No. Bleach and strong solvents can dull or discolour the finish. Stick to warm soapy water or a uPVC cleaner made for coloured finishes, and test it on a hidden area first.

### Will cleaning fade the colour of my uPVC door?

Gentle cleaning will not. Fading comes from harsh chemicals and abrasive scrubbing, or many years of strong sun. Soft cloths, mild cleaners and the occasional protective conditioner keep the colour looking even.

### How often should I clean a coloured uPVC door?

A quick wipe around the handle every few weeks and a full clean a few times a year keeps it looking fresh. Dark colours show marks sooner, so little and often works best.

### Can I polish a coloured uPVC door?

Yes, with a uPVC-safe finish conditioner or polish once or twice a year. It adds a light protective layer and lifts the shine. Avoid any polish containing grit or cutting compound.
