# How to Clean uPVC Doors and Keep Them White

 3 Minutes Read

Knowing how to clean uPVC doors is mostly about doing the simple thing often, and avoiding the harsh stuff that does more harm than good. Warm soapy water, a soft cloth and a bit of regular attention will keep a white uPVC door looking fresh for years. Here is the routine we recommend, plus how to stop that dreaded yellowing before it starts.

## The simple weekly wipe

Most of what dulls a white uPVC door is just everyday grime: dust, pollen, rain splashes and the general muck that settles on anything facing a Yorkshire street. Left alone it builds into a grey film that makes the door look tired. A quick wipe stops that.

All you need is:

- A bucket of warm water with a little washing up liquid
- A soft cloth or sponge (nothing abrasive)
- A dry microfibre cloth to finish

Wipe the door panel and frame down, rinse with clean water, then dry it off so you do not leave streaks. Once a week through the grubby months and once a fortnight otherwise is plenty. It takes five minutes and does more good than any occasional deep scrub.

## The deeper clean, a few times a year

Every few months the door is worth a more thorough going over. Same warm soapy water, but this time get into the detail: the recesses in the panel, the edges of the frame and the bit behind the seals where dirt likes to hide. A soft toothbrush is handy for the corners and mouldings that a cloth cannot reach.

For stubborn marks, a dedicated uPVC cleaner or cream cleaner made for the job works well. What you must avoid is anything harsh: no bleach, no scouring pads, no strong solvents and no wire wool. These scratch the surface, and once uPVC is scratched it holds dirt and dulls far faster. If you want to try a cleaner you are unsure about, test it on a hidden corner first.

## Don't forget the seals, handles and hinges

The rubber seals round the door do a lot of work keeping draughts and rain out, and they last longer if you look after them. Wipe them clean with soapy water, and once or twice a year rub in a little silicone based lubricant to keep them supple. Petroleum based products can perish rubber, so stick to silicone.

While you are there:

- **Handles and locks:** wipe down, and give the lock mechanism a spray of proper lock lubricant so it keeps turning smoothly.
- **Hinges:** clean off grime and add a drop of light oil so the door swings freely.
- **Letterbox and knocker:** a wipe keeps the metalwork looking cared for.

A door that is cleaned and lubricated now and then simply works better and lasts longer. If a lock or hinge has already started to stick or fail, that is a job for a [door repair around York](https://smwindowsanddoors.co.uk/window-door-repairs-york) rather than a cleaning cloth.

## Why white uPVC yellows, and how to slow it

Older white uPVC could yellow over time, mostly from years of strong sunlight and, in the past, from cheaper formulations that were less stable. Modern uPVC is far better at holding its colour, but no plastic is completely immune to the sun.

You cannot stop the sun, but you can slow yellowing:

- **Keep it clean.** A film of grime bakes on in sunlight and discolours faster than a clean surface.
- **Avoid harsh chemicals.** Bleach and solvents can react with the plastic and actually cause or worsen discolouration.
- **Skip the scouring.** Scratches trap dirt and dull the finish.

If a door has genuinely yellowed after many years, cleaning will not turn back the clock. At that point it is really a question of whether to live with it or replace the door. Today's [uPVC doors](https://smwindowsanddoors.co.uk/upvc-doors-york) hold their colour much better than the ones fitted decades ago, and there are plenty of coloured and woodgrain finishes now if you fancy a change from white.

## A quick word on what not to do

To keep it simple, steer clear of:

- Bleach and household cleaners not meant for uPVC
- Abrasive pads, wire wool and scouring cream on the surface
- Solvents like white spirit or nail varnish remover
- Pressure washers up close, which can force water past the seals

Warm soapy water really is the safest and most effective thing for the vast majority of cleaning.

## FAQs

### How do I clean a white uPVC door?

Use warm water with a little washing up liquid and a soft cloth. Wipe the panel, frame and seals, rinse with clean water and dry off to avoid streaks. Do this weekly through the grubby months, with a deeper clean every few months.

### Can I use bleach on uPVC doors?

No. Bleach and harsh chemicals can react with the plastic, cause discolouration and damage the seals. Stick to warm soapy water or a cleaner made specifically for uPVC.

### How do I stop my uPVC door going yellow?

Keep it clean, avoid harsh chemicals and never scour the surface. Grime baking on in sunlight speeds up yellowing, so regular gentle cleaning helps. Modern uPVC holds its colour much better than older doors, but no plastic is fully sun proof.

### What should I put on uPVC door seals?

Clean them with soapy water, then rub in a little silicone based lubricant once or twice a year to keep the rubber supple. Avoid petroleum based products, which can perish the seals over time.

### Can yellowed uPVC be made white again?

Not really. Once genuine yellowing has set in from years of sun, cleaning will not reverse it. You can live with it or replace the door. Newer uPVC doors resist yellowing far better and come in many colours and woodgrain finishes.
