 3 Minutes Read

White uPVC frames look brilliant when they are clean and tired when they are not, and the good news is that keeping them bright is easy once you know how. This guide shows you how to clean uPVC window frames properly, what to avoid, and how to stop that grey, grubby film building up in the first place.

We fit and repair windows across York and North Yorkshire, and we see plenty of frames aged before their time by the wrong cleaning products. A gentle routine keeps them looking new for years.

## What you will need

You do not need anything harsh. In fact, harsh is the enemy here. A simple kit does the job:

- A bucket of warm water
- A drop of washing-up liquid or a mild uPVC cleaner
- A soft cloth or sponge
- An old soft toothbrush for the corners and seals
- A dry microfibre cloth for finishing

That is genuinely all it takes for routine cleaning. Skip the scouring pads and the strong chemicals.

## Step by step: the gentle routine

Work through it calmly and the whole job takes a few minutes per window.

1. **Brush off loose dirt.** Wipe or brush away cobwebs, dust and grit first. Cleaning over grit can scratch the surface, so clear it before you get wet.
2. **Wash with warm soapy water.** Dip your soft cloth in the warm water with a little washing-up liquid and wipe the frames down. Work top to bottom so drips fall onto dirt you have not cleaned yet.
3. **Get into the corners.** Use the soft toothbrush to gently lift dirt from the welded corners, the drainage slots and along the rubber seals where grime loves to gather.
4. **Rinse.** Wipe over with a clean cloth and fresh water to lift any soapy residue.
5. **Dry off.** Finish with a dry microfibre cloth. Drying prevents water spots and leaves the frames gleaming.

Do this every couple of months and the frames will rarely look anything but fresh.

## What not to use on uPVC

This is where most damage happens. uPVC has a smooth surface layer, and once you scratch or dull it, dirt clings far more easily and the frame never looks quite right again. Avoid:

- **Bleach and strong solvents.** They can yellow or dull white uPVC over time.
- **Abrasive creams and scouring pads.** These scratch the surface and create a rough finish that traps dirt.
- **Wire wool or hard brushes.** Same problem, worse.
- **WD-40 or oily products on the frame face.** Fine for hinges, not for the surface, as it attracts dust.

If in doubt, warm soapy water is almost always the safest bet.

## Dealing with stubborn marks

For scuffs, black mould spots or ingrained grime that soapy water will not shift, a dedicated uPVC cream cleaner used sparingly can help. Test it on a hidden corner first, apply gently with a soft cloth, and rinse well afterwards. For mould on the seals, a mild solution and that soft toothbrush usually does the trick. Never dig at the seals with anything sharp, as a torn seal lets in draughts and rain.

## Keeping white frames bright

Prevention beats cure. A few habits keep frames looking their best:

- Give them a quick wipe whenever you clean the glass.
- Clear the little drainage holes along the bottom of the frame so water runs away rather than sitting and staining.
- Wipe down after wet or muddy Yorkshire weather to stop grime settling.
- Do the seals and hinges at the same time, as a clean, lubricated window works better and lasts longer.

Looking after the moving parts matters too. If a handle is stiff or a hinge is squeaking, a little maintenance now saves a bigger job later. When something does go wrong, our [window and door repair team](https://smwindowsanddoors.co.uk/window-door-repairs-york) can sort it, and if your frames are past their best, our [uPVC window range](https://smwindowsanddoors.co.uk/upvc-windows-york) shows what a fresh set looks like.

## FAQs

### How do I clean uPVC window frames without scratching them?

Use warm soapy water and a soft cloth, and clear away grit before you start so you are not rubbing it into the surface. Avoid scouring pads, abrasive creams and bleach. Finish by drying with a soft microfibre cloth to prevent water marks.

### How do I make yellowed uPVC frames white again?

Mild yellowing can sometimes be improved with a dedicated uPVC cream cleaner used gently, but deep yellowing from age or sun is usually permanent because it goes below the surface. Test any product on a hidden area first, and avoid bleach, which can make discolouration worse.

### Can I use bleach on uPVC window frames?

It is best avoided. Bleach can dull or yellow white uPVC and damage the seals over time. Warm soapy water or a proper uPVC cleaner is safer and works just as well for everyday cleaning.

### How often should I clean uPVC window frames?

Every couple of months keeps them looking fresh, with a quick wipe whenever you do the glass. Homes near busy roads or exposed to plenty of weather may need it a little more often.
