# How to Fix a Composite Door That Is Sticking

 3 Minutes Read

A composite door that suddenly starts sticking or dragging catches a lot of people out, often on the first proper warm spell of the year. Sticking problems after a composite door installation are common right across Yorkshire, from York out towards Doncaster and beyond, and most have a simple cause. Here is why it happens and how to sort it, plus when it is worth getting your installer back for a look.

## Why composite doors stick

Composite doors are built to be solid and weathertight, which is exactly why they can bind when conditions change.

- **Heat expansion.** Composite materials expand a little in warm weather, especially darker doors in direct sun. A door fitted with tight clearances can then catch on the frame and free up again as it cools.
- **Seasonal movement.** The frame and the surrounding wall move slightly with temperature and moisture through the year, changing the clearances.
- **A door still bedding in.** A newly fitted door sometimes needs its first adjustment once it has settled, which is completely normal.
- **Dirt and debris.** Grit in the frame or on the seals can stop a door seating cleanly.
- **A dropped hinge.** Over time a heavy door can sag slightly, so it drags at the bottom of the latch side.

Working out which of these you are dealing with points you to the right fix. If it only sticks on hot days, heat expansion is almost certainly the cause.

## First, the easy checks

Before adjusting anything, rule out the simple stuff:

1. Clean the frame, the threshold and the seals, clearing any grit or debris.
2. Check nothing is caught in the gasket, such as a leaf or a build-up of dirt.
3. Wipe the seals and, if they look dry, treat them with a little silicone or rubber conditioner.
4. Note exactly where the door catches, top, bottom, latch side or hinge side, as this tells you which adjustment to make.

## Adjusting the hinges

Composite doors usually hang on adjustable flag hinges, the tall cylindrical type, which move the door in three directions using an Allen key.

- **Lateral (side to side):** if the door catches on the latch side, move it very slightly towards the hinge side to gain clearance.
- **Compression (in and out):** if the door is stiff to close and lock, ease the compression off a touch so it is not pressed so hard into the seals.
- **Height (up and down):** if the door has dropped and drags at the bottom, lift it a little.

Pop the caps off the hinges, make quarter-turn adjustments, and test after each one. Adjust every hinge evenly so the door stays square. In hot weather, aim to leave a small, even gap all round rather than forcing a tight fit that will bind again next summer.

## Do not shave or plane a composite door

It is tempting to reach for a plane when a door sticks, but do not. Composite doors have a tough outer skin over a core, and sanding or planing through that skin exposes the inner material to weather and voids most guarantees. If the clearances are wrong, adjust the hinges or get the fit corrected, rather than removing material.

## When to get an installer check

Hinge adjustments cure most sticking doors. Some signs, though, mean it is worth having your installer back:

- The door still binds after careful adjustment, suggesting the frame is out of square.
- A hinge feels loose or is pulling out of the frame.
- The door sticks all year, not just in warm weather.
- The lock is stiff or will not throw even when the door closes.

A door that was fitted too tight from the start, or into a frame that is not quite square, needs correcting properly rather than endlessly tweaking. If your door is still under guarantee, the installer should put that right.

We look after composite doors across York and North Yorkshire, and we are happy to check a sticking door and adjust it properly. Our [window and door repairs in York](https://smwindowsanddoors.co.uk/window-door-repairs-york) cover hinge and lock adjustments, and if you are considering a new door, our [composite doors in York](https://smwindowsanddoors.co.uk/composite-doors-york) page shows the range, colours and specifications.

## FAQs

### Why is my composite door sticking in hot weather?

Composite doors expand slightly in heat, especially darker doors in direct sun, so a door fitted with tight clearances can catch on the frame and then free up as it cools. A small hinge adjustment usually gives enough clearance to stop it.

### How do I adjust a composite door that is sticking?

Use the adjustable flag hinges. Move the door laterally away from where it catches, ease off the compression if it is stiff to lock, or lift it if it has dropped. Make quarter-turn adjustments with an Allen key and test after each one.

### Can I plane a composite door that is too tight?

No. Planing or sanding cuts through the protective outer skin, exposes the core to weather and usually voids the guarantee. Adjust the hinges or have the fit corrected instead.

### Should composite door sticking be covered by the installer?

If the door is still under guarantee and was fitted too tight or into an out-of-square frame, the installer should correct it. Get them back if the door binds all year or the frame looks out of square.

### How much clearance should a composite door have?

You want a small, even gap all around the door so it closes and locks cleanly without being forced, allowing a little room for heat expansion. If the gap is uneven, the hinges likely need adjusting.
