# How to Fix Condensation on a uPVC Door Frame

Condensation on a uPVC door frame is one of those niggles that looks worse than it usually is. In most cases it is simply damp indoor air meeting a cold surface, and it clears up once you tackle humidity and airflow. Now and then it points to a seal or drainage fault that needs a proper repair. Here is how to tell which you are dealing with and how to sort it.

## Why the frame gets wet in the first place

Your uPVC door frame sits on the line between a warm room and the cold outside, so it is often the chilliest surface indoors. When warm, moist air touches it, the water in that air turns into droplets on the frame. It is the same thing that fogs up a bathroom mirror. The moisture is coming from inside your home, not soaking in from outside.

Yorkshire winters make it more noticeable, because the bigger the gap between the cold frame and the warm room, the more condensation you get.

## Step one: bring the humidity down

Most cases come down to too much moisture in the indoor air. Reduce it and the condensation eases:

- **Run extractor fans** in the kitchen and bathroom, and leave them going for a while afterwards.
- **Open trickle vents** on nearby windows so damp air can drift out.
- **Dry washing outdoors** where possible, or in a closed room with a window cracked open.
- **Vent the tumble dryer** properly, or use a condensing one.
- **Pop the kettle lid on** and cover pans while cooking to cut steam.

A cheap hygrometer helps here. Aim to keep indoor humidity roughly in the 40 to 60 percent range and you will see far less water on the frame.

## Step two: warm the surface and keep air moving

Cold surfaces attract the most condensation, so a stone-cold hallway is asking for trouble. A gentle, steady background heat keeps the frame closer to room temperature. Try not to block airflow either, so move coats, shoe racks and furniture away from the back of the door and let air circulate around the frame.

## Step three: check for a fault

If condensation keeps coming back even after you have cut humidity and improved heating, something may need repairing. Look for these signs:

- **Draughts near the frame**, which suggest the seals have worn, shrunk or come away.
- **A door that does not pull tight** onto its gaskets when locked.
- **Water pooling in the frame** rather than draining away, which can mean blocked drainage slots.
- **Misting between the panes** of any glazed section, which means a failed sealed unit.

These are not lifestyle issues. Worn seals let cold in and warm out, making the frame colder and the condensation worse, so replacing them helps twice over. Blocked drainage slots trap water in the frame, and clearing them lets it escape as intended. Our [window and door repair team in York](https://smwindowsanddoors.co.uk/window-door-repairs-york) can check the seals, drainage and hardware and put things right.

## When the whole door is the issue

If your uPVC door is old, draughty and cold to the touch, the frame will always run cold and attract condensation, however careful you are with ventilation. At that point a better sealed, better insulated replacement is worth considering. Our [uPVC doors in York](https://smwindowsanddoors.co.uk/upvc-doors-york) range shows the modern options, which hold heat far better than doors from a couple of decades ago.

## Rough 2026 costs

Prices vary with the job and your door, so treat these as broad 2026 guides rather than a quote. Replacing worn frame seals is often a small job, frequently around 80 to 200 pounds. Clearing or freeing blocked drainage is usually modest too. A failed glazed unit might run from roughly 150 to 400 pounds depending on size. ## FAQs

### Is condensation on a uPVC door frame normal?

A little on cold mornings is normal and reflects indoor humidity. It only signals a problem if it is constant, causes mould, or comes with draughts, which can mean worn seals.

### How do I stop condensation on my uPVC door frame?

Lower indoor humidity with extractor fans and open trickle vents, dry washing outside where you can, and keep a gentle background heat so the frame does not go stone cold.

### Does condensation mean my door seals have failed?

Not always. If it comes with draughts or the door will not pull tight when locked, worn seals are likely. Steady condensation with no draughts is usually a humidity issue.

### Can blocked drainage cause condensation problems?

Blocked drainage slots trap water inside the frame, which keeps it damp and can add to the problem. Clearing the slots lets water escape as the door was designed to do.
